''मुझे विश्वास नहीं होता; माधव!'' मैंने कहा। ''मैं समझ रहा था कि तुम विश्वास नहीं कसेगे। किंतु यह भलीभाति जानी कि कृष्ण राजनीतिक हो सकता है; पर अविश्वस्त नहीं। ''उसने अपनी मायत्वी हँसी में घोलकर एक रहस्यमय पहेली मुझे पिलानी चाही; चो सरलता से मेरे गले के नीचे उतर नहीं रही थी। वह अपने प्रभावी स्वर में बोलता गया; ''तुम कुंतीपुत्र हो। यह उतना ही सत्य है जितना यह कहना कि इस समय दिन है; जितना यह कहना कि मनुष्य मरणधर्मा है; जितना यह कहना कि विजय अन्याय की नहीं बल्कि न्याय की होती है।''
''तो क्या मैं क्षत्रिय हूँ?'' एक संशय मेरे मन में अँगड़ाई लेने लगा; 'आचार्य परशुराम ने भी तो कहा था कि भगवान् भूल नहीं कर सकता। तू कहीं-न- कहीं मूल में क्षत्रिय है। जब लोगों ने सूतपुत्र कहकर मेरा अपमान क्यों किया?' मेरा मनस्ताप मुखरित हुआ; ''जब मैं कुंतीपुत्र था तो संसार ने मुझे सूतपुत्र कहकर मेरी भर्त्सना क्यों की?''
''यह तुम संसार से पूछो। ''हँसते हुए कृष्ण ने उत्तर दिया।
''और जब संसार मेरी भर्त्सना कर रहा था तब कुंती ने उसका विरोध क्यों नहीं किया?''
