दाऊद इब्राहिम, करीम लाला, हाजी मस्तान यांसारख्या मुंबईतील माफियांवर नियतकालिकं, वृत्तपत्रं अशा माध्यमांमधून अभ्यासपूर्ण लिहिलं गेलं आहे. चित्रपटांमध्ये त्यांच्या व्यक्तिरेखाही रंगवण्यात आल्या आहेत. त्यामुळे त्यांच्या जीवनाचे तपशील, त्यांचे तथाकथित ‘व्यवसाय’ यांविषयी बरीच माहिती सहज उपलब्ध होऊ शकते. परंतु काही स्त्रियादेखील मुंबईच्या याच गुन्हेगारी विश्वाचा हिस्सा आहेत, ही गोष्ट फारशी ज्ञात नाही. अंडरवल्र्डच्या भाई आणि दादा लोकांच्या खांद्याला खांदा लावून, तर कधी मार्गदर्शन करून आणि पडद्यामागून सूत्रं हलवून या स्त्रियांनी अंडरवल्र्डचे अवैध धंदे चालवण्यास मदत केलीे. या पुस्तकात प्रथमच अशा काही स्त्रियांच्या जीवनाचा मागोवा घेण्यात आला आहे; आख्यायिका बनलेल्या या स्त्रियांच्या जीवनकहाण्या चित्रित केल्या आहेत.मुंबईच्या अंडरवल्र्डची यापूर्वी कधीही उजेडात न आलेली बाजू अत्यंत चित्तवेधक शैलीत, सखोल संशोधन करून या पुस्तकात मांडली आहे.
