One of the best accounts of the early days of the war. The first hand stories from diaries and narrated accounts puts those first few months in context and really brings home the amazing job that the BEF did. A must read for anyone interested in WW1 history.

Lyn Macdonald is one of the most highly regarded historians of the First World War. Her books are based on the accounts of eyewitnesses and survivors, told in their own words, and cast a unique light on the First World War. Most are published by Penguin.
