L'Ariosto non fu soltanto l'ingegnoso e affascinante inventore de L'Orlando furioso, ma anche colui che inaugurò, nella storia del teatro italiano e europeo, la moderna commedia regolare in volgare. Dal 1508, data in cui risle la "Cassaria" in prosa e dunque la fondazione del genere, fino agli ultimi anni della sua vita, l'Ariosto seppe procedere gradualmente con le quattro commedie (e una quinta incompiuta) verso una sempre più evidente autonomia dai modelli plautini e terenziani, fondendo satira e realismo con risultati di grande impatto espressivo e spettacolare.
