For years people from all parts of the world have gravitated to the city of Amsterdam and, like elsewhere, their fate has been shaped by the economic, sociopolitical, and cultural environments of their new homes. Liza Nell is assistant professor of cultural anthropology at Leiden University. Jan Rath is professor of urban sociology and director of the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies at the University of Amsterdam.
