This pervasive nature of language means that it may form the starting point for an investigation into virtually any aspect of social life. In recent years, this has led to a stretching of the boundaries of language studies, prompted by an intense cross-fertilisation of ideas with a wide range of disciplines. Dr Sandhya Rao Mehta specialises in English literature, particularly in the area of postcolonial studies, with a focus on the language and literature of emerging nations. She has published widely in scholarly journals and in anthologies of critical studies, and has spoken at many international conferences. She is on the editorial board of a number of journals and presently teaches at Sultan Qaboos University, Oman.
