About the author

Ken Newman (1924–2006), renowned bird painter and birder, contributed significantly to the growing interest in and awareness of birds in southern Africa. His numerous books have sold close to a million copies worldwide. Past president of the South African Ornithological Society, he received the SAOS Gill Memorial Award and the Zoological Society’s Stevenson-Hamilton Award. His daughter, Vanessa Newman, who has inherited her father’s keen birding instincts, lives and works in London.
