In the winter of 1943, Benjamin is just a grunt and Army cook-until he finds himself captured, along with his unit, taken prisoner by Mussolini’s troops after the Battle of Tunisia.

Transported to a POW camp in Italy, Benjamin is plagued with intense visions of the Norse Goddess Frigga and her retinue of Valkyries, berserkers, and other magical beings.

Really interesting take on WW2 and mythology, as we follow the story of an American POW in an Italian prison camp. After Ben is captured early in the war, he finds inspiration to survive in an unusual source...and finds out he has comrades in unexpected places. I enjoyed the resourceful way Ben used his ability to cook, both to become invaluable to his captors and to funnel nourishment to his fellow POWs. In the end, he discovers he is a link in a mortal chain, the significance of which cannot b
