Auszug: "Die Gesichtszüge des Herrn Mac Whirr, Kapitäns des Dampfers Nan-Shan, schienen das vollkommene Widerspiel seines Charakters zu sein: sie boten keine bestimmten Merkmale weder von Festigkeit noch von Beschränktheit; sie drückten überhaupt keinerlei Eigentümlichkeit aus; sie waren einfach gewöhnlich, ausdruckslos und unbeweglich. Das Einzige, was sich in seinem Aussehen hie und da anzudeuten schien, war Schüchternheit; in den Geschäftszimmern der Reeder konnte man ihn nämlich, ein schwaches Lächeln auf dem sonnverbrannten Gesichte, mit niedergeschlagenen Augen sitzen sehen. Schlug er sie auf, so bemerkte man, daß sie blau von Farbe und offen und ehrlich im Ausdruck waren. Sein Haar, das blond und außerordentlich fein war, umschloß die kahle Wölbung seines Schädels wie ein Kranz von seidenem Flaume. Sein über der Lippe kurz abgeschnittener Bart dagegen war flammend rot und glich einem Gestrüpp von Kupferdraht, während über seine Wangen, mochte er sich noch so glatt rasieren, bei jeder Bewegung des Kopfes metallische Funken zu gleiten schienen. Er war unter Mittelgröße, etwas rundschulterig und so derb von Gliedern, daß seine Kleider immer um eine Idee zu eng für seine Arme und Beine zu sein schienen. Als ob er unfähig wäre zu begreifen, welche Anforderungen die Verschiedenheit der Breitegrade an die menschliche Kleidung stellt, trug er immer und überall einen braunen Filzhut, einen vollständigen Anzug von gleicher Farbe und plumpe schwarze Stiefel."
