New York playwright Melina Green fights to have her voice heard in a man’s world - forced to hide behind a lie to get her work on stage.

Centuries before, her ancestor Emilia Bassano, mistress to one of Elizabeth I’s nobles, faced the same silence. Her bold act of rebellion changed everything - but at a great cost.

Two women, separated by time, united by defiance. Together, they challenge a world built to keep them quiet.

I enjoyed the book. I don't know if I can be convinced of its premise, that Emilia Bassano wrote many of Shakespeare's greatest plays - Romeo & Juliet, Hamlet, The Merchant of Venice, for example - but without doubt, there has been most scholarly, careful research put into its arguments and narrative. I found the modern day story - of a descendant of Bassano in the USA who is a female playwright forced to submit her play under a male name - a little unecessary, maybe? I love Picoult's books. I look forward to each one 's publication, with their sensitive take on very important matters. I must confess though to being a ittle irritated by one little thing in the book. The dialogue. English people nowadays often refer to others as "you lot"; they may say they are "headed to" somewhere; they may refer to someone as "smart"; they may say "he bought me a pint." I do not belive they would have in Tudor times! The name Joyce was not a common one then. There was a small stock of commonly used names, due to literacy levels. While someone may have the rank of "baron" they are typically addressd as "lord" and not referred to a "The Baron" as the character in this story is.
