Das Buch führt in die Geschichte, die zentralen Begriffe, die theoretischen Grundlagen sowie in die Praxis der qualitativen und interpretativen Sozialforschung ein. Behandelt werden systematisch alle Phasen der Forschung: die Planung, die Praktiken der Datenerhebung (Interview, Feldforschung), die Datenfixierung und Datensicherheit sowie die verschiedenen Methoden der Datenauswertung (Schwerpunkt: Inhaltsanalyse, Hermeneutik) und schließlich die Erstellung eines Forschungsberichts.
