Lassiter empfand tiefste Empörung, denn die Frau tat ihm Unrecht. Sein Anblick versetzte sie in Panik. Sie schrie sich die Seele aus dem Leib. Ihr Gesicht war verzerrt vor Angst, und sie streckte ihm abwehrend beide Handflächen entgegen, weil sie mit dem Rücken an der Wand stand.
Sie gebärdete sich, als wäre er der schlimmste vorstellbare Unhold. Das Gellen ihrer Stimme ließ seine Trommelfelle klirren. Vergeblich versuchte er ihr klarzumachen, dass er nichts weiter getan hatte, als ihr einen guten Tag zu wünschen. Sie verstand ihn nicht. Anklagend zeigte sie auf die Wölbung unter seinen Gürtelschließen.
"Und das?", kreischte sie. "Was ist das? Wenn das keine Bedrohung ist..."
