Das Schreckliche geschah an einem Dienstag, Anfang August. Kitty Logan war mit ihrer Mutter in Carver's Drugstore, als vor dem Geschäft ein Kutschwagen zum Stehen kam. Der Mann hinterm Ladentisch tippte gerade die Preise in die Kasse, da flog die Tür auf und Marshal Myers stürzte herein. Der Sternträger galt als ruhiger, umgänglicher Mann, jetzt war er völlig aufgelöst.
"Mrs. Logan!", keuchte er. "Sie müssen sofort mitkommen!"
"Was ist los?", fragte Kittys Mutter.
"Es geht um Jack, Ihren Mann. Ich erklär's Ihnen vor Ort!"
Sie ließen die Einkäufe im Drugstore zurück und rannten mit dem Marshal zum Wagen. Kaum hatten sie Platz genommen, schwang er die Peitsche und das Fuhrwerk raste die Straße entlang. Kitty schmiegte sich verängstigt an ihre Mutter.
"Es wird alles gut, mein Kind", sagte Mrs. Logan. Sie sollte sich irren.
