Es war nach Mitternacht, als der große Mann mit dem Marshal-Stern an der Weste in die Seitengasse einbog. Mit schweren Schritten stapfte er bis zum Walker House, wo er zur Untermiete wohnte. An der Vordertür blieb er stehen und kramte in seinen Taschen nach seinem Hausschlüssel. Ohne Erfolg. Hatte er ihn etwa im Saloon verloren? Während er darüber nachsann, ob er noch einmal seinen Heimweg abschreiten sollte, öffnete sich die Tür. Mrs. Walker, die Hausbesitzerin, erschien. Ein viel zu großer Morgenmantel verhüllte ihre schmächtige Gestalt. "Marshal Lassiter", sagte sie, "hatten Sie mir nicht versprochen, keinen Schnaps mehr zu trinken?" Der große Mann gab seiner Stimme einen lallenden Klang. "Jawoll, Ma'am, aber manchmal kommt es anders, als man denkt ..."
