Am Ufer lag ein Toter auf dem Bauch. Lassiter saß ab und schaute ihn sich an: Der Mann trug einen der mausgrauen Longjohns, die unter Cowpunchern verbreitet waren. Zwei Löcher verunzierten die Leiche: eins im Rücken, eins im Hinterkopf. Lassiter konnte sich nicht vorstellen, dass jemand mit einem Einschussloch im Hinterkopf lange durch die Landschaft reiten konnte. Der Bandit hatte sich das Loch im Rücken vermutlich bei dem Feuergefecht im Zug zugezogen. War er seinem Komplizen deswegen zur Last gefallen und von ihm zum Teufel geschickt worden? Dass der Tote keine Stiefel trug und bis auf die Unterwäsche ausgezogen war, konnte bedeuten, dass Miss McSween nun wieder bekleidet war. Wenn dieser Mann hier tot war, musste sie seinem Mörder näher stehen. War sie die Braut des Killers?
