Excerpt: "In der Mitte der Hauptstraße von Highmarket stand eine wuchtige, massive Torfahrt, die noch aus dem Mittelalter stammte. Wenn man hindurchging, kam man auf einen quadratischen Hof, zu dessen Seiten sich alte Steinhäuser erhoben. Welcher Bestimmung diese Gebäude früher gedient hatten, war nicht mehr zu erkennen, jetzt wurde hier ein Baugeschäft betrieben. Große Stapel norwegischen Holzes türmten sich an der Mauer; Schieferplatten aus Wales, Marmorstufen aus Aberdeen und Zement von Portland lagerten hier in Mengen. Die Räume der Gebäude waren mit allen möglichen Materialien gefüllt, die zum Hausbau benötigt wurden: Tür- und Fensterbeschläge aus Eisen und Bronze, Zink, Blei, Dachziegel, Röhren und alle Bedarfsartikel, die die moderne Technik dafür geschaffen hatte. Auf einer polierten Messingplatte am Eingang konnte man den Namen der Firma lesen: Mallalieu & Cotherstone, Baugeschäft."
