1945. La Corée vient d'être libérée du joug colonial japonais. Mais la vague d'enthousiasme se transforma vite en désespoir. Le 25 juin 1950 l'armée nord-coréenne envahit le sud. Fervent partisan communiste, M. Bae croit que l'heure de la révolution est venue. Au nom de celle-ci il sème la terreur et massacre ses anciens maîtres coupables, à ses yeux, d'être nobles. Mais le rêve est vite brisé. Désespéré, M. Bae passera sa vie à cacher son passé, pour échapper à la justice. Un jour, pourtant, le fils de l'une de ses victimes retrouve sa trace.
