The country was under the rule of various empires and kingdoms, including the Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, and Arabs. During the 20th century, Libya went through a period of colonization by Italy and was then ruled for over 40 years by Muammar Gaddafi until his downfall in 2011 during the Arab Spring. Since then, the country has been plagued by political instability and violence, with various factions vying for control. Libya is also a major oil-producing country, but its oil industry has been impacted by the ongoing conflict.
