I first read this book in 8th grade, when I was just starting to develop my own half-informed opinions on the world around me, and long before I realized that I was a lesbian. This was the first book I read that really captured what it was like to be a teenager trying to form her own opinions and figure out her sexuality. It also introduced me to the dangerous, power-hungry people who can hide in extremist groups and make their violence look justified, even noble. It introduced me to a thought: What happens when those who question authority try to become an authority in your life? Aside from all that, it's simply beautifully written. It doesn't caricaturize its antagonists. It's real. It's honest. I still reread it all the time.
