About this ebook

'The Fifth Gospel is that rare story: erudite and a page-turner, literary but compulsively readable' David Baldacci

2004. As Pope John Paul II's reign enters its twilight, a mysterious exhibit is under construction at the Vatican Museums. A week before it is scheduled to open, its curator is murdered. The same night, a violent break-in rocks the home of the curator's research partner, Father Alex Andreou, a Greek Catholic priest who lives inside the Vatican with his five-year-old son. When the papal police fail to identify a suspect in either crime, Father Alex, desperate to keep his family safe, undertakes his own investigation.

To find the killer he must reconstruct the dead curator's secret. But just as he begins to understand the truth about his friend's death, and its consequences for the future of the world's two largest Christian Churches, Father Alex finds himself hunted down ...

A conspiracy thriller that could have ended sooner and quicker. The plot was ok, but the way the book was developed and too many religious technicalities made the book to be too bored and uninteresting.

This is good, very good. I learned a great deal about gospels that I had wondered about in a vague way previously but had not found the impetus to research properly. There is also a good story weaved into the secrecy of the Vatican and the Catholic church. As others will, I scratched my head over what this central secret might be and found it to be a realistic proposition. The setting of the tiny, independent country in the middle of Rome is well described and adds to the authenticity of the story. The relationship between the principal characters is a very interesting one. Well done Mr Caldwell.

First the word "Gospel" is supposed to be good news. To manipulate the word to to deceive, reveals the author's intention. Speaking only of intrigue and deception, where is the good news.
