‘‘... प्रत्येक माणसाला आयुष्यभर कुणाचा ना कुणाचा मत्सर वाटत असतो. ज्या सुखाला आपण लायक आहोत, ते दुसऱ्या कुणालातरी मिळतंय, ह्याचं एक ठसठसणारं दु:ख तो कायम जवळ बाळगून असतो; आणि त्याहीपेक्षा कुचंबणा अशी, की हे कुठं बोलता येत नाही! त्यासाठी मी ‘दिलासा मंडळ’ स्थापन केलं. मनातली सगळी मळमळ त्यानं इथं ओकायची..... याचे वर्गणीदार वाढण्याचा सीझन म्हणजे साहित्य संमेलनं, नाट्य संमेलनं, साहित्य पुरस्कार जाहीर होतात, तो काळ..... इथं ढोंगी माणसाला प्रवेश नाही. निखळ मत्सरी माणसं हवीत....’’ माणसानं मनात दडवून ठेवलेल्या अशा बऱ्यावाईट स्वाभाविक भावना उदार अंत:करणानं समजून घेणं आणि आपल्या खास नर्म-मुलायम, मिस्कील शैलीत त्या आविष्कृत करणं, हा श्रेष्ठ कथालेखक वपु काळे यांच्या कथालेखनाचा महत्त्वाचा विशेष. मुळात जीवनाकडे पाहण्याचा त्यांचा दृष्टिकोनच प्रसन्न, आशावादी व उदार आहे; आणि अवघड विकारांचाही धीटपणे आविष्कार करण्याचं त्यांचं कसब तर वाचकाला विस्मयचकित करतं. ‘इन्टिमेट’मधील प्रत्येक कथा याच कारणानं मनाला भिडते.
Throughout our life each one of us envies some one or the other in some form. Every one of us always have a feeling that something that we deserve the most is being given to someone else, who is not so deserving. This very thought kills us. The fact that this secret cannot be shared with anyone is worse than the nagging feeling itself For these people who are suffering the most with the disease of envy, I opened a club, 'Dilasa Mandal' or 'Relief Club'; with the only intention of providing an outlet for the venom so filled up in their mind. The peak period of this club is either that of the 'Sahitya Sammelan and Natya Sammelan' or the period when the 'Sahitya Puraskars' are awarded. But the only condition for the admission is people should be really jealous of someone, those with no jealousy get no admission at all. The most salient feature of Va Pu's writing is that he understands all the good and bad feelings in everyone's mind and further tries to put them into simple yet effective writings with his 'Midas touch'. He considers life with earnest zeal, enthusiasm and a positive approach. He is always hopeful in the most hopeless situations. He not only presents the very good in life around him but with the same intensity and intimacy presents the evil of those otherwise innocent minds, which astonishes the reader every time he reads one of Va Pu's stories. 'Intimate' is no exception to this rule.
