Homeland Security: The Essentials, Third Edition concisely outlines the security risks facing the US today and the structures we have put in place to deal with them. The authors, renowned experts in the field, delineate the bedrock principles of preparing for, mitigating, managing, and recovering from emergencies and disasters in a brief, accessible fashion, reinforced by applied case studies, key term definitions, critical thinking sections, and review questions. From cyberwarfare to devastating tornadoes and car bombs, all hazards currently fall within the purview of the Department of Homeland Security, yet the federal role must be closely aligned with the work of partners in the private sector. The book lays a solid foundation for understanding this collaboration, as well as the present and future threats to our communities and to national security, challenging readers to imagine more effective ways to manage these risks. Carefully updated throughout, the new edition includes revised workflows and communications, and explanations of FEMA and legislative homeland security policies, along with fully updated sections on evolving terrorist threats, expanded forms of terrorism, major terrorist incidents in recent history, strategic planning directives, counterterrorism approaches, border security, transportation security and safety, cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection, All-Hazards Emergency Response and Recovery, and homeland security communication and technology.
