Nimmt man Humes Moralphilosophie heute ernst, dann ahnt man, worauf es ankommt, wenn es um die vieldiskutierten Fragen von moralischer Erziehung und Bildung geht. Ansprache an die Vernunft reicht in Sachen Moral eben nicht aus, sondern auf emotionale Sensibilisierung kommt es an. Ich fand, dass alle Philosophen unter demselben Mangel litten, nämlich gänzlich spekulativ zu sein und mehr auf Erfindungen als Erfahrung zu beruhen. Jeder nahm nur seine eigene Fantasie, seine Einbildungskraft im Errichten von Lehrgebäude ernst, ohne die menschliche Natur zu beachten. Ich entschloss mich daher, die menschliche Natur zum Hauptgegenstand meines Studiums zu machen. David Hume nimmt also Abschied von allen hochfliegenden Spekulationen, wie sie durch Philosophie und Theologie geistern. Will einfach nur die menschliche Natur ergründen.
