Goenawan Mohamad coba menjelasja buku ini, yang menarik bagi saya ialah bahwa ada tendensi antipuisi justru di kalangan sastrawan dan teoretikus sastra sendiri. Dalam beberapa esai ini, saya mencoba menjawab itu. Tentu saja saya harus mengemukakan pandangan saya secara lebih sistematis. Buku ini secara bertahap bermaksud merumuskan itu—juga kritik saya kepada beberapa pandangan yang pernah dikemukakan orang, misalnya kaum “Dekonstruksionis” ala Derrida, kaum “realisme sosialis”, sampai dengan beberapa tesis Walter Ong, Paul Ricoeur, dan S. Takdir Alisjahbana.
