Ausgehend von Ernst Robert Curtius' Traditionsverständnis untersucht Golo Blasche die Kulturphilosophie und die politische Haltung dieses vielleicht meistdiskutierten Romanisten des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Fokus steht dabei die Frage nach dem kritischen Bewusstsein des Bonner Gelehrten im Umgang mit den normativen Ansprüchen von Überlieferung an Gegenwart und Zukunft. Hiervon ausgehend zeigt der Autor, dass sich das oft als konservativ oder restaurativ beschriebene Denken des Philologen keineswegs derart abschließend als ideologischer Widerspruch zur Moderne deuten lässt, wie bisher von Teilen der Forschung angenommen wurde. Durch die traditionstheoretische Analyse von Curtius' Werk wird vielmehr deutlich, dass hierin tatsächlich ein ethisch, freiheitlich und systematisch begründetes Problembewusstsein wirkt für die vielfältigen Herausforderungen von kollektiver Erinnerung und traditionaler Autorität in der Moderne. Based on Ernst Robert Curtius' understanding of tradition, Golo Blasche analyses the cultural philosophy and the political stance of this probably most discussed Romanist of the 20th century. The focus lies on the degree of his critical awareness in dealing with the normative demands of tradition towards the freedom of modernity and an undetermined future. In this context, the author shows to what extent the famous scholar of the European literature – who is often criticized as conservative, restorative and sometimes even as a pre-fascistoid – actually developed a systematically founded, explicitly modern and ideology-critical perception of the various challenges of traditional power to culture, education, society and politics.
