Menghafal Al-Qur’an atau dikenal dengan Tahfiz Al-Qur’an mendapatkan perhatian besar beberapa tahun terakhir. Tidak hanya pesantren atau lembaga tahfiz yang mulai memprioritaskan kegiatan ini sebagai bagian dan programnya, tetapi sekolah swasta maupun negeri menjadikan tahfiz Al-Qur’an ini sebagai program sekolah. Namun semangat dalam mengembangkan program tersebut dalam praktiknya belum diiringi dengan acuan penilaian yang jelas. Acuan di sini, khususnya berkenaan dengan penentuan kriteria atau indikator apa saja, seseorang disebut sebagai orang yang hafal AI-Quran atau hafiz.
