Questo racconto breve, di genere noir, trova la sua ambientazione nell'Italia di fine Ottocento. Il protagonista partecipa insieme ad altri personaggi ad un'inquietante seduta spiritica volta a rivelare le misteriose circostanze che hanno portato alla morte prematura della giovane e bella Alma. L'incontro, condotto da un esperto sensitivo, è però destinato a prendere una piega cruenta che porterà ad una tragica risoluzione finale. Gaspare Invrea (1850-1917) fu un avvocato e un nobile genovese vissuto a cavallo tra Ottocento e Novecento. (pseudonimo Remigio Zena). Lasciati gli studi per arruolarsi nell'esercito pontificio, rimase a Roma fino alla conquista della città da parte delle truppe italiane, per poi conseguire la laurea a Genova nel 1873. Nel 1875 entrò nella magistratura civile, iniziando una carriera che lo avrebbe visto ricoprire svariati incarichi in numerose città dell'Italia e in Africa.
