Lafcadio Hearn, born 1850 in Greece, known also by the Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo, went to Japan, when he was 40 years old, as a newspaper correspondent for “Harper’s Magazine”. His writings about Japan from the beginning of the Meiji era, when the country was just opening to the West, remain among the most important and fascinating explanations of Japanese culture. The book, Fuji-no-Yama, tells about him climbing the highest (and magic) mountain in Japan. Because of its first descriptions of pre-industrial and Meiji Era Japan, his work has historical value. His search for beauty and tranquility, for pleasing customs and lasting values, kept him there the rest of his life, a prestigious Japanophile.
