«Mein Roman bin ich, meine Geschichten sind ich», hat Franz Kafka 1913 an Felice Bauer geschrieben. Diesen Satz nimmt Thomas Anz ernst, und er zeigt zugleich, wie der jüdische Schriftsteller seine Vater-, Berufs-, Frauen- und Künstlerkonflikte so stark und suggestiv ins Exemplarische stilisiert hat, dass sie zu beklemmenden Mustern moderner Identitätsprobleme werden konnten. Wohl beläßt Anz diesem Einzelgänger, der die eigene Isolation zur Bedingung künstlerischer Existenz erklärt hat, seine Eigenart, aber er sieht ihn nicht isoliert von seiner – der «expressionistischen» Generation, nicht einer Zeit entrückt, deren Kämpfe und Konflikte Franz Kafkas Werk geprägt haben.
