Emblematico forse più di ogni altro racconto dello stile e della ispirazione di Francis Scott Fitzgerald, "Il giovane ricco" fu scritto a metà degli anni Venti a Parigi, dove lo scrittore e la moglie Zelda condividevano con diversi altri americani come Gertrude Stein, John Dos Passos, Henry Miller, Ezra Pound, e soprattutto Ernest Hemingway, la vita della cosiddetta "Generazione Perduta". E proprio Hemingway, nelle bellissime pagine dedicate all'"amico Scott" in "Festa mobile", ricordando la crisi creativa che aveva colpito il grande narratore dei "roaring twenties" dopo l'iniziale insuccesso de "Il grande Gatsby" e prima del ritorno alla grande creatività di "Tenera è la notte", scriveva: «... In tutto questo tempo scrisse un solo racconto veramente bello: Il giovane ricco...».
