È un errore considerare la scrittura elegante e razionale di Jane Austen come una conversation piece. La Austen è una scrittrice politica. Però sotto le righe. La misura dei suoi dialoghi contiene una forza sovversiva: Emma è un romanzo sulla manipolazione degli altri, sul potere che ci vuole a sua immagine e somiglianza. Ma allo stesso tempo (e qui si vede la grande narratrice) è la storia di una donna sola, troppo intelligente per essere felice in una società senza aperture. Caterina Bonvicini

About the author
Jane Austen nacque nel 1775 nello Hampshire, e visse tutta la vita nella famiglia di origine. Scrisse molti dei suoi romanzi nella prima giovinezza, ma fu solo dal 1811, dopo l’uscita di Ragione e sentimento, che iniziò a pubblicarli, e con un certo successo. Morì nel 1817, a 41 anni.
