Eine ägyptische Muse, zu der er eine Beziehung hatte, brachte ihn auf die Idee, wie man durch Muskelkraft und mithilfe der Spirale Wasser durch ein hölzernes Rohr auf ein höhergelegenes Niveau zur Bewässerung der Felder anheben konnte. Vorausgegangen waren zahlreiche weitere Erfindungen und Erlebnisse aus der damaligen Zeit, die das Buch zu einer interessanten Lektüre machen.

Der österreichische Schriftsteller Egmont Colerus behandelte in seinen Romanen aus einer zutiefst humanistischen Weltsicht in impressionistischer oder auch expressionistischer Art zahlreiche Problemstellungen in historischer Einkleidung. Darüber hinaus schrieb er mehrere Sachbücher. Er zählte damit zu den erfolgreichsten deutschen Schriftstellern (Gesamtauflage über 670.000 Exemplare).
