Although the players and tactics behind these operations have changed, the influence of misinformation continues to shape South Africa’s political landscape. This book, through case studies from 2019–2020, explores these shifts, their impact, and how the country can address the ongoing threat.
Dzvinka Kachur is a research fellow at the Centre for Sustainability Transitions, Stellenbosch University. Her research focuses on disinformation in South Africa, Russian influence in sub-Saharan Africa, and the implications of the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Africa, including UN reform, nuclear safety, and human rights. She has examined the Russian Nuclear Deal in South Africa and the Russian presence in Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Zambia. Dzvinka holds MSc degrees from the University of Oxford and the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy.

Robyn Foley is a research fellow at the Centre for Sustainability Transitions, Stellenbosch University. Focusing on complexity in governance and the political economy, she co-edited Anatomy of State Capture (2021), also contributing to six of the 19 chapters in the book. In 2019, Robyn attained her MPhil in Sustainable Development (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University. She also holds a BSc Physics (2007) and a BSc Honours in Technology Management (2008) from the University of Pretoria.
