About this ebook

The moss-covered tombstones stood like sentinels in the overgrown cemetery, their inscriptions barely legible through the layers of grime and lichen. The Wilkins Family Plot was the oldest section, dating back to the early 1800s when the plantation was in its heyday.

Even from the road, Jared could see the crooked fence and tangled vines creeping among the graves. A shiver ran down his spine as he approached the rusty gate. The hairs on the back of his neck stood on end as if warning him to turn back. But he couldn't resist the chance to explore the legendary cemetery after hearing so many tales over the years.

As he passed through the gate, the thick air of decay and damp earth enveloped him. His footsteps seemed to echo unnaturally loud in the silence. Jared made his way between the ancient headstones, examining the elaborate carvings and designs, thinking about the lives -and deaths- of those interred here so long ago.

That's when he heard it. The soft, joyful sound of childish laughter, like music carried aboard a warm breeze. He froze, ears straining to pinpoint the location of the unexpected noise. There it was again, a series of high-pitched giggles coming from somewhere amid the crumbling graves.

"Stupid kids messing around," Jared muttered to himself, shaking his head. He moved towards the sound, peering between the leaning stones with narrowed eyes. The giggling seemed to be coming from the very oldest section, where the tree roots had long ago disrupted and bucked the earth.
