Affordable and effective domestic wastewater treatment is a critical issue in public health and disease prevention around the world, particularly so in developing countries which often lack the financial and technical resources necessary for proper treatment facilities. Duncan Mara is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Biology, the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and the Royal Institute of Public Health. He is also Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Leeds and Visiting Professor at the Instituto Cinara, Universidad del Valle, Colombia.
