Elle a alors effectué une profonde mutation économique - après avoir été une compagnie nationale au service de l'Etat, elle réalise en 1997 sa première ouverture de capital - et identitaire, la constitution du groupe Air France ayant réuni les salariés de compagnies concurrentes, à l'histoire, à la culture d'entreprise et aux règles d'emplois très différentes.
