Mahesh Kothare is an Indian actor, film director and producer of Marathi and Hindi films. He has worked in Indian cinema from a young age and acted in well-known movies such as Raja Aur Runk, Chhota Bhai, Mere Laal, and Ghar Ghar ki Kahani. The well known Hindi song Tu kitni achhi hai tu kitni bholi hai o maa from the film Raja Aur Runk features Kothare as Master Mahesh.Considered a revolutionary figure in the Marathi film industry, he began his directorial career with the groundbreaking Dhumdhadaka (1985) and has since delivered many box office hits over a period of 20 years. Kothare's films are known for their technical nuances and fantasy concepts and he is one of the few Indian film makers who have made successful films in the fantasy genre.Kothare made the first Marathi film in true 3D, Zapatlela 2, a box office hit which was released on 7 June 2013 and was the sequel to his 1993 box office blockbuster Zapatlela. In the original horror comedy a doll named Tatya Vinchu comes to life, while the sequel adds animatronics and state of the art CGI.
महेश कोठारे हे मराठी चित्रसृष्टीतील, मालिका जगतातील फार मोठं नाव. त्यांनी ‘छोटा जवान’ या चित्रपटाद्वारे अभिनय क्षेत्रात प्रवेश केला. त्यानंतर अनेक हिंदी व मराठी चित्रपटांमधून ते बाल कलाकार म्हणून झळकले. त्यांनी एलएल. बी. ही पदवी मिळवली व काही वर्षं वकिलीदेखील केली. ‘प्रीत तुझी माझी’ हा नायक म्हणून त्यांनी केलेला पहिला चित्रपट. ‘घरचा भेदी’, ‘लेक चालली सासरला’ या चित्रपटांमधून त्यांनी खलनायक साकारला. ‘गुपचुप गुपचुप’, ‘थोरली जाऊ’ अशा चित्रपटांमधून सहाय्यक अभिनेता म्हणून काम केलं. ‘धुमधडाका’नं त्यांना पदार्पणातच यशस्वी निर्माता-दिग्दर्शक म्हणून ओळख मिळवून दिली आणि त्यांच्या ‘झपाटलेला’ ‘दे दणादण’ इ. चित्रपटांनी ती दृढ झाली. त्यांनी मराठी चित्रपटांत नवनवीन तंत्रज्ञान आणण्याचे प्रयोग केले. मराठी चित्रपटांमध्ये डॉल्बी डिजिटल ध्वनी पहिल्यांदा वापरण्याचं श्रेय कोठार्यांनाच जातं. ‘मन उधाण वार्याचे’द्वारे त्यांचं मालिका क्षेत्रातही दमदार आगमन झालं आणि ‘जय मल्हार’ने त्यावर कळस चढवला. २००९मध्ये त्यांना महाराष्ट्र शासनाचा पुरस्कार मिळाला.
