Podrobnosti o e‑knize

This digital primer serves as an excellent introduction to conjugated polymers, particularly in terms of their synthesis and design. Chapters one and two introduce common terminology and fundamental concepts. Chapter three covers known structure–function relationships that can be used to design conjugated polymers with the desired properties for specific applications, concluding with a discussion of the additive and sometimes conflicting aspects of these design elements. Chapters four, five, and six cover the various methods used to synthesize these materials, beginning with the oldest and most simple approaches, and increasing in synthetic complexity.

Advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and faculty wishing to enter this field for the first time should find this primer beneficial. At the same time, however, we have pointed out various misconceptions still commonly found in the literature, which should be valuable to those already familiar with these materials.

O autorovi

Seth C. Rasmussen is a Professor at North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo. He received his B.S. from Washington State University in 1990 and his Ph.D. from Clemson University in 1994. After serving as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Oregon, he accepted a teaching position at Oregon in 1997, before moving to NDSU in 1999. He was named a Fulbright Senior Scholar in 2018, a Fellow of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in 2021, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry in 2022, and a Fellow of the ACS Division of the History of Chemistry in 2023. Active in both materials chemistry and the history of chemistry, his interests include the design and synthesis of conjugated materials, photovoltaics, organic light-emitting diodes, the history of materials, chemical technology in antiquity, and the application of history to chemical education. He serves as the series editor for the book series Springer Briefs in History of Chemistry and Perspectives on the History of Chemistry and as an advisory board member for the journals Chemical Science and Substantia: An International Journal of the History of Chemistry.

Spencer J. Gilman earned his B.A. in chemistry from St. Cloud State University in 2018 before beginning his graduate studies in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at North Dakota State University. He is currently working on the synthesis and characterization of conjugated materials for near-infrared emitters and photodetectors. He received the Phillip and Gertrude Boudjouk Chemistry Graduate Student Fellowship in 2022 and the Roy Milde Scholarship in 2023. He spends his free time reading and rock climbing.

Wyatt D. Wilcox earned his B.A. in chemistry from the University of Minnesota, Morris, in 2018 before beginning his graduate studies in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at North Dakota State University. He is currently working on greener approaches for the synthesis of common electron acceptors in conjugated polymers and the development and application of ambipolar units in conjugated copolymers for organic electronics. He is the President of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Graduate Student Association at NDSU and serves as a student representative for the local Red River Valley section of ACS.
