Each progression covers many playing styles encountered by the modern bassist, including: walking, 2-beat, syncopated rhythms(funk), Latin, bebop changes, pop-rock, blues, traditional blues, deadened-string technique, funk playing plus full chord progressions within tunes. Earl Gately has had extensive performing experience in such diversified areas as jazz festivals, featuring such artists as Ernie Krivda, Dennis Diblasio, Anthony Garcia, John Fedchock, etc., two full-time symphony orchestras, many combos, and big bands. Prior to his retirement in 2003, he taught at Western Illinois University, Bradley University, and Knox College. Briefly summed up, Earl has a complete range of musical experience and continues actively as a performer. His students have worked with many great artists such as Herbie Mann and Arturo Sandoval. Several are now in military service bands, and many have gone into music education.
