Variation studies is an increasingly popular area in linguistics, becoming embedded in curriculum design, conferences, and research. However, the field is at risk of fragmenting into different research communities with different foci. Jason Grafmiller is Assistant Professor of Corpus-based Sociolinguistics at the University of Birmingham (UK). His research involves the application of various quantitative techniques to examine the forces shaping how language varies across regions, styles, and time.
