Hermann est né en 1938, en Belgique. Il sort d'une enfance passée au milieu de la guerre et de l'occupation avec une envie urgente d'apprendre un métier, et une confiance toute relative en l'Homme. Après un détour par le Canada, il rentre au pays natal et se marie. Hasard de la vie, c'est son beau-frère, Philippe Vandooren, qui le mettra sur les rails en lui commandant une histoire pour une revue scoute dont il s'occupe. Hermann se prend au jeu, et va frapper à la porte du studio Greg. L'auteur d' « Achille Talon » est immédiatement frappé par le vent de renouveau que le jeune homme fait souffler sur le dessin réaliste, et entame « Bernard Prince » en sa compagnie. Suivront les aventures de « Comanche », à l'issue desquelles la notoriété d'Hermann est telle qu'il peut sereinement envisager de se lancer en solo. Il en résultera « Jeremiah », tout d'abord, et une pléthore de one-shots, au fil desquels il nous fait partager son goût pour l'aquarelle, mais surtout une certaine misanthropie. Hermann ne s'en est jamais caché : il se méfie de l'Homme, ne l'aime guère. Et toute son oeuvre a pour ambition de nous plonger le nez dans notre propre noirceur. Et il est rare, et précieux, qu'une telle laideur épouse de la sorte la beauté du dessin !
