Earlier, Anders' debut novel Choir Boy (2005) won a Lambda Literary Award, and her Tor.com story “Six Months, Three Days” won the 2012 Hugo Award for Best Novelette. Her journalism and other writing has appeared in, among other venues, Salon, Mother Jones, McSweeney’s, and the Wall Street Journal. She was for many years the managing editor of the website io9.
