A young woman, captive in a desert fort, faces her certain death. She is Brigitte Bonnet, a leading figure among the Doelak Arabs, condemned for sedition and bloodshed. Her last night on earth is filled with memories of her power among the Doelak people as their ruler, her sisterโs death, and the approaching execution. The tension is palpable as twilight descends upon the desert and the tolling bell signals her end. It is revealed that she is a powerful woman who acted barbarically, yet now sits sobbing with fear, alone in a prison cell.
Teuns Stegmann, a legion soldier, is with his comrades in an Arab cafรฉ where the execution is being discussed. Tempers flare, particularly those of Fritz Mundt, who regards Bonnet as a witch. Teuns, burdened by guilt for his role in her capture, is reminded by his comrades that the Arabs will seek revenge. The cafรฉโs atmosphere is thick with tension and dark shadows as Abdoel Hoessein, an enigmatic merchant, unexpectedly makes an appearance and openly discusses the execution with them.
A night of betrayal unfolds, and by dawn, it is discovered that Bonnet has inexplicably escaped. DโArlan, the astute captain, suspects internal treachery. Teuns is urgently summoned to the colonel, where he recounts his encounter with Abdoel Hoessein the previous evening. An investigation identifies Wodiak, Antonetti, and Renner as the culprits, and one of the traitors is found murdered. DโArlan departs with Teuns and other men to confront Hoessein, but they walk into a deadly ambush. Teuns miraculously manages to escape, but the others are captured. What awaits Teuns, and what secrets lie behind Bonnetโs escape?

Francois Alwyn Venter (27 November 1916 - 8 July 1997) was a prominent Afrikaans writer of the 20th century.ย His novels explored biblical religious themes or cultural identities in the South African context.ย He was born in Hopetown and grew up on his parents' farm in the Britstown district.ย He studied at theUniversity of Stellenbosch and commenced a career as journalist in 1938.ย For 25 years he worked as a journalist in Cape Town, Pretoria, Windhoek and Johannesburg.ย He also wrote popular fiction, under the pseudonyms Meiring Fouchรฉ, Elske te Water, Renรฉ Stegmann and Marius de Jongh.ย
F.A. Venter received the Hertzog Prize for prose in 1976 for his novels Swart Pelgrim and Geknelde land. For Kambro-kind he received the ruitertrofee (equestrian trophy) of the Suid-Afrikaanse Federasie van Rapportryerskorpse in 1982.ย In 1981 the University of Port Elizabeth awarded him the honory degreeย D. Litt in recognition for his writings.ย In 1996 he received the Andrew Murray Prize for Literature. He was in addition a member of theMaatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde (a Dutch society for literature).ย F.A. Venter died in 1997.
