The developed world has an increasingly aging population, with approximately 10% of the population aged over 65 years. As the incidence and prevalence of blood disorders increases with age, these conditions are a heavy burden on healthcare systems. A detailed chapter on antithrombotic therapies is also included.

William Ershler is Director of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Aging and Geriatric Medicine, Washington DC.
Giovanni de Gaetano is Director of the Research Laboratories at the Centre for High Technology Research and Education in Biomedical Sciences, Catholic University, Campobasso, Italy.
