Le lendemain, le New York Times arrive dans les kiosques du monde entier, avec un sous-titre percutant : " Dans un discours enflammé, le pape Benoît attaque tout : le sécularisme, le djihad, l'islam et le prophète Mahomet ".
Le 14 septembre, un responsable koweitien invite tous les pays musulmans à rappeler leurs ambassadeurs au Vatican. De Djakarta à Amman, de Riyad à Naplouse, des dizaines de dignitaires musulmans s'indignent soudain de la " provocation " du pape.
