सरदार वल्लभभाई पटेल को पहले से जानता था। जब वह भारतीय संविधान परिषद् के सदस्य थे तो मेरा उनसे परिचय बढ़ गया। वहाँ दिए हुए उनके भाषणों को मुझे अच्छी तरह स्मरण है। उनकी वाणी राष्ट्र की आवाज होती थी, जिसके संबंध में न तो कोई अशुद्धि कर सकता था और न भ्रांति हो सकती थी।
जब वह बंबई के बिड़ला भवन में स्वास्थ्य लाभ कर रहे थे तो मुझे स्मरण है कि मैं सोवियत संघ जाते समय उनसे विदा लेने गया था। उन्होंने मुझे चेतावनी दी थी कि यह कार्य बड़े-बड़े प्रसिद्ध व्यक्तियों को असफलता दे चुका है, किंतु साथ ही उन्होंने यह भी कहा, ‘‘जहाँ अन्य व्यक्ति असफल हो चुके हैं, वहाँ आप सफल होंगे।’’ वास्तव में सरदार के उक्त शब्द मास्को में मेरे राजदूत काल भर मेरी स्मृति में रहे। मैं आपको यह बतला रहा हूँ कि वह किस प्रकार परिस्थिति के निर्णायक, भावी रूप के विधाता तथा सुदूर भविष्य को ठीक-ठीक देख लेने की क्षमता रखते थे। जब तक वर्तमान भारत जीवित है, उनका नाम वर्तमान भारत के ऐसे राष्ट्र-निर्माता के रूप में सदा स्मरण किया जाता रहेगा, जिन्होंने 600 भारतीय देशी राज्यों का एकमात्र संघ बनाया। उनका यह कार्य हमारे देश के एकीकरण की दिशा में अत्यधिक स्थायी कार्य था।
