About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish physician and author, a man of formidable intellect and diverse passions, who is eternally celebrated as the creator of the world's most famous consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, on May 22, 1859, Conan Doyle trained as a physician at the University of Edinburgh. It was here that he met one of his professors, Dr. Joseph Bell, whose keen powers of observation and deductive reasoning would become the primary inspiration for Holmes's character. While waiting for patients in his struggling medical practice, Conan Doyle began to write fiction to supplement his income. In 1887, his first Sherlock Holmes novel, A Study in Scarlet, was published, introducing the brilliant detective and his loyal companion, Dr. John Watson, to an unsuspecting world.

Despite the immense popularity of Holmes, Conan Doyle had a complex relationship with his creation, believing the detective stories distracted from his more "serious" work, such as his historical novels like Micah Clarke. He famously "killed" Holmes in "The Final Problem" (1893) to focus on other writing, only to be met with an unprecedented public outcry. Bowing to immense pressure and lucrative offers, he resurrected the beloved character a decade later in The Hound of the Baskervilles and continued to write Holmes stories for many years.

Beyond Holmes, Conan Doyle was a prolific author of science fiction (including The Lost World), historical epics, and plays. He was also a man of action and principle, serving as a field doctor in the Boer War and personally investigating real-life miscarriages of justice, leading to the exoneration of two wrongly convicted men. In his later years, following the loss of his son in World War I, he became a fervent and leading advocate for Spiritualism, a conviction that often placed him at odds with the public and his contemporaries.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle passed away on July 7, 1930. While he prided himself on his many accomplishments, it is for the brilliant, analytical, and immortal Sherlock Holmes that he is most remembered, having created a character that has shaped the mystery genre for over a century and remains a true icon of literature.

Dr. Hau B Lau is a cultural investigator and myth-buster dedicated to exploring the topics we think we know but profoundly misunderstand. With a background that spans academic research and field investigation, Dr. Lau's work is defined by a relentless pursuit of the "unfiltered" truth, cutting through moral panic and conventional wisdom with data, historical context, and raw human stories.

He founded The Unfiltered Documentary series to serve as an antidote to a world saturated with misinformation. Each book tackles a controversial subject head-on, applying a consistent, documentary-style framework to separate fact from fiction, science from stigma, and history from hysteria.

Dr. Lau operates under a pen name to ensure the focus remains squarely on the subjects, not the author, allowing the work to challenge, educate, and empower readers without distraction. He believes that by understanding the things we fear, we reclaim power over them.
