About this ebook
Il nome Argentina deriva dal latino argentum (argento) ed è associato alla leggenda della Sierra del Plata, comune tra i primi esploratori europei della regione, sia spagnoli che portoghesi. Questi ultimi chiamarono l'estuario scoperto dalla spedizione del 1502, alla quale partecipò Amerigo Vespucci, Rio da Prata (Río de la Plata) e anni più tardi le popolazioni indigene offrirono doni in argento ai sopravvissuti di un naufragio guidati da Juan Díaz de Solís, che nel 1516 chiamò l'estuario Mar Dulce. La leggenda raggiunse la Spagna attorno al 1524, e il nome venne messo su stampa per la prima volta in una mappa veneziana del 1536.
