Nach einer Begriffsklärung von nihonjinron wird in Anlehnung an die Arbeit von Sugimoto (1999) auf die verschiedenen Gattungen innerhalb des nihonjinron eingegangen. Daran anschließend wird anhand von Aussagen des Textes und anhand seiner Rezeption in der Wissenschaft eine Einordnung des Werkes Ishiharas in die verschiedenen Kategorien des nihonjinron-Diskurses vorgenommen. Es kann gezeigt werden, dass das Werk die Merkmale des Konsumenten-nihonjinron (Befu 2008) weitestgehend erfüllt. The topic of this paper is the analysis of the book by Ishihara Shintaro ‟The Japan that can say No.” The questions ‟Is this book an example of the nihonjinron-literature? And if so, then of what kind of ninhonjinron-literature?“ will be answered by using the work of Befu and Sugimoto. It will be proven, that the book is a good example of consumer-nihonjinron. This paper is based on a 60-minutes long presentation and a following academic discussion in the module “Japanese History” in the Bachelor program Japanology at the Goethe University in Frankfurt.
