A Light in Winter

Cold, the cold of winter, the chill of the Elders' decisions, the frozen emotions of holding back an attraction that their society denied them. Heat, the warmth of affection, the heat of bitter angry guilt, the hot moments of connection between two souls destined for each other. With an intuitive world construction, this short story slowly builds an ambience beyond the physical world and into a particular society's structure. The painting of the characters, starting with a stark sketch and gradually filling in nuanced shadows, finer details, and finally strong, heady colours leaves the reader with an almost bitter, yet at the same time empowering, sensation that the two protagonists can be each other's strength, hold one another's heart, and face together the world that would have them deny their deepest identities, their own selves, their love. -- Freddo, il freddo invernale, il gelo delle decisioni degli Anziani, le emozioni congelati dal frenarsi in un'attrazione che la loro societò gli nega. Caldo, il calore dell'affetto, il caldo, amaro, rabbioso del sentirsi in colpa, i momenti scottanti della connessione tra due anime destinati l'un l'altro. Con una costruzione intuitivo di un mondo, questa novella lentamente crea un ambiente oltre il mondo fisico e entra nella struttura di una società particolare. Nel dipingere i personaggi, si inizia con una bozza in bianco e nero, e poi gradualmente si completa gli sfondi con suggerimenti e ombreggiature, dettagli più fini, e infine colori fortechiaro che lasciano al lettore una sensazione quasi amaro, eppure allo stesso tempo di forza interna, che i due protagonisti potranno essere quel che rafforza l'uno all'altro, tenersi ognuno il cuore del altro, e affrontare insieme il mondo che gli farebbe negare la loro identità più profonda, loro stessi, il loro amore.
